Angry SMOG Problem

03 wrx with 3' turbo back exhaust. Hydrocarbons are too high at 109 PPM. All else passed the smog check. cars seems to take too long to drop the hydrocarbons at idle. But at higher RPM's the Hydrocarbons are lower. the engine is warm and the cats are at a good working temp. Also between idle and 4000RPM sounds like spurttering ANY IDEAS WHATS WRONG?

MAF sensor is clean

Sparks Plugs are low miles

1000 miles on oil

Thumbs up Re: SMOG Problem

At Autozone where i bought the original spark plugs, showed the plugs. found out they were not gaped, unlike the person said there almost a year ago. Now i have free new plugs and i gaped them myself. There is no idle problem and its runs cooler temps and no misfiring.

Hydrocarbons still too high at idle. now the tech will be running a diagnostic test. so far the diagnostic said the that the cat is not working properly. Replace the high flow cat? Any ideas?

I would need to know what your front and rear o2's are doing, if the rear o2 sensor isn't toggling its fine, but if its toggling your cat is toast

Unhappy Re: SMOG Problem

sounds like the misfiring has ruined the cat. since it has only 1 cat on the exhaust, and its far away so its takes a while to warm up. pretty much its not filtering the exhaust like it should.

you have a hi-flow cat? i know some of the evo guys pass with hi-flow cats and some don't. best bet is to toss on the stock cat if you have it.

Talking Re: SMOG Problem

The tech found out the cat was not getting hot enough to work properly. So step one is 3500RPM for 10min= from 120HC is now 77HC. So i passed the SMOG.
